Full-Body
Check-Up in Bali for Over-40s: The Tests That Matter Most
For adults over 40, the full-body check-up tests that matter
most are cardiovascular screening (blood pressure, lipid profile, ECG
and often an echocardiogram), metabolic screening (fasting glucose and
HbA1c for diabetes), organ imaging via abdominal ultrasound,
age-appropriate cancer screening, and a thorough doctor consultation to
put it all in context. Forty is the age at which silent,
slow-building conditions — high blood pressure, prediabetes, rising
cholesterol — become common enough that screening genuinely changes
outcomes. An Executive-tier package in Bali is built around exactly
these priorities.
As the medical advisor for Bali Medical Checkup, I
think of the over-40 check-up as a shift from “baseline” to “active
surveillance.” In your 20s and 30s a basic panel reassures; from 40
onward, screening starts catching the things that, addressed early, add
healthy years. Here’s what to focus on, and why.
Why 40 is a turning point
The risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes climbs
steadily through the 40s and 50s, and several cancers become more common
too. This is why public-health bodies concentrate routine screening in
midlife and beyond (World
Health Organization, “Noncommunicable diseases”). The point of an
over-40 check-up isn’t to find disease you can feel — it’s to find the
early signals you can’t feel yet.
The tests that matter most
1. Cardiovascular screening
Heart and vascular disease is the priority. A meaningful over-40
screen includes:
- Blood pressure measurement
- Lipid profile (LDL, HDL, triglycerides) to estimate
cardiovascular risk - Resting ECG, and often an
echocardiogram or treadmill stress
test for those with risk factors
For the detail on cardiac tests, see our heart disease risk
check-up guide.
2. Metabolic and diabetes
screening
Type 2 diabetes often develops silently for years. The key tests are
fasting blood glucose and HbA1c (your
three-month average blood sugar), which together catch prediabetes while
lifestyle change can still reverse it. Our diabetes and
metabolic screening guide explains which tests catch it
earliest.
3. Organ imaging
An abdominal ultrasound screens the liver,
gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas — picking up fatty liver, gallstones,
and cysts that bloods alone miss. This is a standard Executive-package
addition and a major reason over-40s step up from a Basic tier.
4. Age-appropriate cancer
screening
Screening priorities diverge by sex from 40 onward:
- Women: breast screening (ultrasound or mammography)
and cervical screening (Pap smear). See women’s
health screening. - Men: discussion of PSA testing and related markers.
See men’s
preventive check-up. - Both: selected tumour markers and imaging where
family history warrants it. See cancer early-detection
tests.
5. The doctor consultation
At 40+, the closing consult matters more than ever, because results
need interpreting against your accumulating risk profile, not just
reference ranges. A good physician will translate your numbers into an
actual plan.
Which package fits an
over-40 adult?
For most healthy over-40s, an Executive package hits
the right balance — it adds the cardiovascular imaging, metabolic depth
and organ ultrasound that matter at this age without over-testing. Those
with a strong family history of cancer or heart disease should consider
a Deluxe or specialty package. Our comparison of basic vs
executive vs deluxe lays out the trade-offs, and the packages pillar page shows
the full options.
How often should over-40s
screen?
A reasonable rhythm for most over-40 adults is a comprehensive
check-up every one to two years, with annual screening
if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes in the
family, or a history of smoking. Your doctor’s advice on frequency,
based on your results, should override any generic schedule.
Making it fit a Bali trip
Plenty of over-40 expats and retirees combine their annual screening
with time in Bali. The logistics are easy to manage on a short visit —

Questions over-40s commonly
ask
“I had a check-up in my 30s and it was fine — can I skip a
few years?” Forty is exactly the age not to coast. The risks
that screening catches rise steadily through this decade, and a clean
result at 35 says little about your cardiovascular or metabolic picture
at 45. A check-up in your early 40s re-establishes your baseline against
your current age and risk.
“Do I really need an ultrasound and ECG, or are bloods
enough?” Bloods are powerful but blind to structure. An
abdominal ultrasound can reveal fatty liver or gallstones that bloods
only hint at, and an ECG captures rhythm and strain a blood test cannot.
For most over-40s, adding organ imaging and a cardiac trace is the
single biggest reason to step from a Basic to an Executive package.
“How should I prepare?” The same fundamentals apply
at any age: fast for 10–12 hours, bring your medication list, avoid
alcohol and hard exercise the day before. Our preparation
guide walks through it, and getting it right means your glucose and
lipid results are accurate the first time.
“What will I actually do with the results?” That is
the heart of it. The point of an over-40 screen is not the tests
themselves but the plan that follows — a doctor translating your numbers
into concrete steps on diet, activity, blood pressure or cholesterol.
Screening only adds years if it changes something, so treat the closing
consultation as the most valuable part of the day.
The bigger
picture: screening as an investment
Think of an over-40 check-up less as a medical errand and more as a
periodic audit of your most important asset. The conditions it targets
are, to a large degree, modifiable — caught early, raised blood
pressure, prediabetes and high cholesterol respond to changes you
control. The cost of a thorough Executive screen is modest set against
the cost, financial and personal, of a preventable event a decade later.
That is the quiet logic behind screening in midlife: small, regular
checks now to keep your options open later.
